There is an alternative to adoption for couples suffering of infertility and it is a surrogate pregnancy. It means that another woman becomes pregnant with a baby which is given up to the couple at parturition. Gestational surrogacy is an alternative that enables the parents to give their genetical material to the child. The mother may donate her eggs and father may donate his sperm cells. The surrogate's genetic material is not used at all. It is the most significant fact.

The egg is fertilizated with sperm during in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET). The result of the ferilisation is an embryo. The embryo is inserted in the surrogate mother and the pregnancy starts. The main aim is to carry the baby full term for the hopeful parents.

During the fertilization process, pregnancy and postpartum period the surrogate gets fully paid medical care. Besides most surrogates receive a large payment for their assistance, especially if they are contracted by an agency and carry a child for unknown parents. In some cases friends or relatives can help as unpaid surrogates their dears who cannot have children.

Surrogate pregnancy can be a long and strenuous procedure for both the surrogate and the parents who are looking foward to the long awaited baby. Communication with other surrogates or parents is advisable. The contact with the people who understand the situation because they are undergoing the same worries and distress can help to feel much more positive. Nine months of pregnancy is felt as a very long time for both the surrogate and the parents, however it is worth every moment for people who want their own child more than anything, and for the surrogate who wants a big payment and to offer the service to others.
